Interdisciplinary Graduate Education
Graduate Minor Programs and Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs
University of Osaka promotes interdisciplinary education that transcends the boundaries of
traditional departments and graduate schools. As part of this initiative, we offer two types of
educational programs—Graduate Minor Programs and Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate
Programs—designed primarily for graduate students. These programs allow students to explore subjects
outside their primary major or to study related fields that enhance their specialized
expertise.
Each program consists of a structured curriculum of courses aligned with specific educational goals.
By meeting the requirements set by a program, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion
upon finishing their graduate studies (this includes those completing Master’s degrees, as well as
those withdrawing from Doctoral programs after completing the required credits).
For the 2022 academic year, 19 Graduate Minor Programs and 40 Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate
Programs are available.
Furthermore, some Advanced Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are also open to 5th and 6th-year
undergraduate students in 6-year programs (Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical
Sciences).
Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and Social Sciences
The Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and Social Sciences (HGP-HSS) at University of Osaka was
established in April 2024. Operated through the collaboration of various departments within the
humanities and social sciences, it is one of the university’s “Knowledge Gymnastics” programs.
Alongside specialized studies in their primary graduate schools, students are provided with a
curriculum that offers insights into diverse humanities and social science fields, as well as
opportunities for practical learning in various real-world settings. The program also features
cross-departmental exchange among honors students and courses that provide travel support for
fieldwork and other activities.
In the 2024 academic year, the program accepted its first cohort within two tracks: the Global Japan
Studies Unit and the Socially Engaged Research Unit. Starting in the 2025 academic year, four new
units will be added: Arts-Based Research, Philosophy of Science and Technology, Language Sciences,
and DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) Design. The Honors Graduate Program in Humanities and
Social Sciences is designed to complement the existing Honors Graduate Program in Science,
Engineering, and Informatics. However, it differs in several aspects, such as being exclusively
available to students in Doctoral programs (Doctoral Late Phase).
Global Leadership Program
Nurturing Leaders Who Drive Global Change
The Program for Leading Graduate Schools
An integrated, quality-assured degree program that transcends the boundaries of specialized fields.
Multilingual Expert Program (MLE)
Equipping individuals with specialized knowledge to address urgent issues in modern society and nurturing global leaders who can contribute on an international scale.
