Using panel data for 1,741 Japanese municipalities in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2021, access is proxied by geodesic distance from each municipal centroid to the nearest municipality with a law office. Fixed-effects estimates show that closer access is associated with higher divorce rates. No significant association is found for suicide. Closer access predicts lower all-cause mortality, with reductions in heart-disease deaths for men and cerebrovascular deaths for women, suggesting legal access may ease marital exits yet mitigate health risks.
