The People Behind the IAFOR Reseach Centre
The work of the Research Centre is overseen by Professor Virgil Hawkins in the university, who also acts as Director of Research and the official liaison. The representative of IAFOR is Dr Joseph Haldane.
Virgil Hawkins

Virgil Hawkins holds a PhD in International Public Policy from the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), Osaka University, where he currently serves as professor. He is also a research associate with the University of the Free State, South Africa.

Before joining OSIPP, Dr Hawkins was an assistant professor at the Global Collaboration Center, Osaka University (2007-2010), and has also served with the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) in Cambodia (technical advisor, 2002-2004), and in Zambia (country director, 2004-2007).
World news coverage is the topic of his research. Through the lens offered by news media we can typically only see small parts of the world some of the time. News about the world in the Japanese news media, for example, typically makes up roughly 10 percent of the total amount of coverage, and there are large imbalances in terms of regions and topics covered. The trends in these imbalances are basically the same regardless of the medium (print, broadcast, online) or media ownership (state or commercial).
Professor Hawkin's research involves examining the output of the news media and the related gatekeeping process, with a view to understanding the type and extent of the imbalances in the world news and why they exist. The output of much of this research (primarily in Japanese) can be found at the GNV (Global News View) website [https://globalnewsview.org/] established and maintained by my research group at the university. In addition to overall trends in regional coverage, his research also involves case studies looking at the content and timing of coverage of particular events or phenomena. While keeping an eye on the world at the whole, my research puts particular emphasis on Africa, a continent that despite hosting a considerable amount of potentially newsworthy events and phenomena, is the recipient of very little coverage. In this regard, I am also involved in the operation of a centre working to understand and raise attention to the region – the Southern African Centre for Collaboration on Peace and Security (SACCPS) [https://saccps.org/].
Joseph Haldane

Joseph Haldane is the founder, chairman and CEO of IAFOR. He is responsible for devising strategy, setting policies, forging institutional partnerships, implementing projects, and overseeing the organisation’s global business and academic operations.

Dr Haldane has a PhD from the University of London in 19th century French studies (ULIP/RHUL), and has research interests in world history and politics; international education; and governance and decision making. Since 2015 he has been a Guest Professor at Osaka University’s School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), and since 2017 Co-Director of the OSIPP-IAFOR Research Centre.
In 2020 Dr Haldane was elected Honorary Professor of University College London (UCL) through the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, and in 2022 full Professor in the United Nations Peace University's European Center for Peace and Development. A member of the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network for global governance, he holds visiting professorships at Belgrade and Doshisha Universities, where he teaches ethics and governance. He is a member of the International Advisory Council of the Department of Educational Foundations at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa.
Professor Haldane has had full-time faculty positions at the Université Paris-Est Créteil, Sciences Po Paris, and Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, as well as visiting positions at the French Press Institute (Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas), and the Schools of Journalism of Sciences Po Paris and Moscow State University.
Dr Haldane has been invited to speak to universities and conferences globally, including at the UN HQ in New York, and advised universities, NGOs and governments on issues relating to international education policy, public-private partnerships, and multi-stakeholder forums. He was the project lead on the 2019 Kansai Resilience Forum, held by the Japanese Government through the Prime Minister’s Office, and oversaw the 2021 Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned study on Infectious Diseases on Cruise Ships.

Brian, from the United States, is a graduate student at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study conducting research in Japan.

His undergraduate work was done in the United States before beginning postgraduate studies in economics at the University of Glasgow.
Brian served in the US military during multiple overseas operations, then joined the Peace Corps to work on economic development in sub-Saharan Africa. Most recently Brian has been managing the refugee employment department of a resettlement agency, assisting refugees as they arrive in the United States. His current research interests are in international law, particularly refugee and human rights law, and he is conducting research into Japan’s position on, and participation in, the associated international instruments.

Nguyen Anh Tuyet has a PhD from Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP), Osaka University. Her research interests are public health, inequality, aging population, Asian studies, and applied econometrics.

Nguyen Anh Tuyet has written on several papers, with her recent publications (“Socio-economic-related health inequality in non-communicable diseases among older people in Viet Nam.” Le DD, Leon-Gonzalez R, Giang TL, Nguyen AT (2020), in Ageing & Society; and “Factors associated with regional disparity in utilization of healthcare services among Vietnamese older people,” Nguyen.AT, Giang.Tl (2020), in the Journal of Population and Social Studies. Before that, Nguyen worked in the Risk Management Department at a local bank in Vietnam for eight years as a senior credit assessment. This position, at a dynamic financial institution, gave her valuable practical experience about large corporate issues as well as the domestic economic industry in Vietnam and developing countries.

Shuqi Wang (China) recently completed her doctoral degree in Public Policy and Global Affairs from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Her research focuses on international relations, foreign policy analysis, and alliance politics, with a regional specialization in the Asia-Pacific. Born and raised in China, she completed her undergraduate studies in International Politics and a Master of Diplomacy at Peking University, China. Currently, she conducts research on the historical influences on foreign policy preferences within US alliance systems, focusing on the cases of Japan and South Korea.

Hongmin Anh holds a Master of Theological Studies in Buddhism from Harvard Divinity School and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Bard College, United States. As an interdisciplinary scholar, Mr Ahn's research focuses on modern transnational Buddhism in Korea and Japan, exploring their history, culture, practices, gender dynamics, and institutions such as clerical marriage and the popularization of Buddhism through military chaplaincy.

Azusa Iwane (Japan) is the vice-project manager and editor at Global News View (GNV), an independent media outlet introducing the Japanese audience to international news overlooked by domestic mainstream media.

Azusa Iwane is also a researcher specializing in international media coverage and the role of independent media, focusing on raising awareness on poverty issues. Ms Iwane has extensive experience working with international development NGOs. Her master’s thesis dealt with how African poverty issues are represented in the Japanese media. She conducted a series of field studies in Zambia to better grasp the effective poverty experienced by mining communities present in Zambia with the collaboration of the Dag Hammarskjöld Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, Copperbelt University, Zambia.

Yanhua Zhou is currently a Professor of Art History at the Research Center for Visual Art, Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, China.

She is also affiliated as a Professor of Contemporary Chinese Art and Gender and Associate Director of Wanwu Art Research Lab at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Arizona, United States, where she obtained her PhD in East Asian Studies with a focus on Chinese Anthropology. Taking an interdisciplinary approach combining art history, anthropology, area studies, and cultural studies, her research focuses on the issue of art and geographic politics of contemporary art in a transnational context, affective infrastructural studies, and non-human agency in art.

Professor Georges Depeyrot is a monetary historian at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris.

Professor Georges Depeyrot began his scientific career in the 1970s studying coin finds and joined the CNRS in 1982. After some years he joined the Center for Historical Research in the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) and is now a professor at the École Normale Supérieure. After his habilitation (1992), he specialised in international cooperative programs that aim to reconsider monetary history in a global approach. He has directed many cooperative programs linking several European countries, including those situated at the continent’s outer borders (Georgia, Armenia, Russia, and Morocco). Professor Depeyrot is the author or co-author of more than one hundred volumes, and is the founding director of the Moneta publishing house, the most important collection of books on the topic of money. Professor Depeyrot is a member of the board of trustees of the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique.

Professor Ljiljana Markovic is Dean, Chairperson of the Doctoral Studies Program and Full Professor in Japanese Studies at the University of Belgrade, Serbia.

Dr Ljiljana Markovic holds the positions of Chairperson of the Association of Japanologists of Serbia, Member of the University of Belgrade Council, Chairperson of the University of Belgrade SYLFF Committee, Member of the Republic of Serbia, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Bilingual Education Board, and Member of the Republic of Serbia, Ministry of Culture, Committee on Books Procurement for Public Libraries. She has previously served as Vice Dean for Financial Affairs, Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade (2008–2016). In 2010 she received the Gaimu Daijin Sho Award from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and in 2011 she received the Dositej Obradovic Award for Pedagogical Achievement. She is the author of a large number of publications in the fields of Japanese studies and economics.

Gary E. Swanson is the former Mildred S. Hansen Endowed Chair and Distinguished Journalist-in-Residence at the University of Northern Colorado, USA.

From 2005-2007 Professor Swanson was a Fulbright scholar to China and lectured at Tsinghua University and the Communication University of China. In summer 2008 he was Commentator for China Central Television International (CCTV-9) and their live coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games. Swanson repeated his assignment covering the London Olympics for CCTV-4 in the summer of 2012.
Previously, he was professor and director of television for nine years at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University where he taught mostly graduate broadcast students. He has been an educator for 26 years; 20 years spent teaching at the university level. Swanson is an internationally recognised and highly acclaimed documentary producer, director, editor, photojournalist, consultant and educator. He has given keynote speeches, presented workshops and lectured at embassies, conferences, festivals, and universities throughout China, South Africa, India, Papua New Guinea, Japan, The Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Singapore, Greece, Germany, Jordan, Spain, Portugal, Peru, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Professor Swanson has compiled a distinguished professional broadcast career spanning 13 years: From 1978 to 1991, and worked for the National Broadcasting Company where he was honoured with national EMMYs for producing and editing: The Silent Shame, a prime-time investigative documentary; Military Medicine, a two-part investigative series on NBC News; and Hotel Crime, an investigative news magazine piece. Swanson was an editor for "breaking news and features" for NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, the Today Show, Sunrise, Sunday Today, NBC Overnight, A Closer Look, Monitor, and other prime time news magazines. Swanson covered "breaking news" in 26 states and Canada for the network including trips and campaigns of presidents Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Bill Clinton. Swanson was the Fulbright distinguished lecturer and consultant in television news to the government of Portugal in 1989. In 1992, he covered the XXV Olympics in Barcelona, Spain for NBC News as field producer and cameraman. Swanson has earned more than 75 awards for broadcast excellence and photojournalism including three national EMMYs, the duPont Columbia Award, two CINE 'Golden Eagles,' 16 TELLYs, the Monte Carlo International Award, the Hamburg International Media Festival's Globe Award, the Videographer Award, The Communicator Award, the Ohio State Award, the CINDY Award, the 2011 Communitas Outstanding Professor and Educator award, the 2013 Professor of the Year award, and many others. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1974, and a Master's degree in Journalism in 1993.

Dr James W. McNally is the Director of the NACDA Program on Aging, a data archive containing over 1,500 studies related to health and the aging lifecourse.

Dr James W. McNally currently does methodological research on the improvement and enhancement of secondary research data and has been cited as an expert authority on data imputation.
Dr McNally has directed the NACDA Program on Aging since 1998 and has seen the archive significantly increase its holdings with a growing collection of seminal studies on the aging lifecourse, health, retirement and international aspects of aging. He has spent much of his career addressing methodological issues with a specific focus on specialised application of incomplete or deficient data and the enhancement of secondary data for research applications. Dr McNally has also worked extensively on issues related to international aging and changing perspectives on the role of family support in the later stages of the aging lifecourse.

Dr Sugai is a Professor of Marketing within Doshisha University's Graduate School of Business where he currently teaches Marketing, eMarketing, Marketing Research, and Sustainable & Responsible Marketing. Dr Sugai also served as a Visiting Professor for Stanford University from 2015 to 2017, where he taught Innovation in Japan at the Stanford Overseas campus in Kyoto.
Prior to joining the Doshisha University faculty, Dr Sugai taught at the International University of Japan in Niigata where he also served as Dean and Associate Dean of the IUJ Business School for six years.
Dr Sugai is the author of two books, The Value Plan and The Six Immutable Laws of Mobile Business (John Wiley & Sons) and has published case studies with Ivey Business School Publishing on KITKAT Japan, AGL, Hatsune Miku and Walt Disney Internet Group.
He received his Doctorate degree from Waseda University and his MBA in Marketing and Operations Management from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He has worked as a marketing executive at American Express, Muze, Inc., and Lightningcast, Inc., and currently serves as a marketing advisor and marketing strategy consultant to companies both in Japan and globally.

Fan Li is an International Advisor at the LePing Social Entrepreneur Foundation, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR), China.
Fan founded Global Links Initiative with Robin Rowland in 2003, a nonprofit organisation headquartered first in Tokyo and then in Shanghai that fostered practical links among social entrepreneurs around the world. In 2004, GLI first brought the concept of social entrepreneurship to China.
Fan was a founding member of the China-US Strategic Philanthropy Partnership (CUSP), a leading network that promotes research, exchange and collaboration between the philanthropic sectors of China and the United States, she worked with CUSP from 2010 to 2016. Fan connected and advised partnership building between two leading social enterprises in Japan and China from 2009 to 2012, which resulted in the first China-Japan social joint venture in sustainable farming.
Fan is co-editor-in-chief of the Chinese version of Stanford Social Innovation Review. She is also editor of the groundbreaking book, A New Horizon: 10 Stories of Social Entrepreneurs in China (HongKong, 2010). Her translation of Kazuyoshi Fujita’s book, Radish Revolution, was one of the best sellers of the SanLian Publishing House in 2013. She currently serves as International Advisor for the LePing Foundation in Beijing. Fan’s work as Senior Fellow at the IAFOR Research Centre leads efforts to grow the East Asia Social Innovation Initiative, a cutting-edge network for research, dialogue and knowledge sharing on social innovation in East Asia.
